A rescue girl, a loving home and a life taken far too soon.
When Luna’s family bought their first home, they were incredibly excited about finally having a cat of their own.
They wanted to give a rescue cat the happy life she deserved, and when they found Luna at their local Blue Cross, they knew she was the one.
Luna had experienced a difficult start in life, but she was now home. She had a family who loved her and a future full of possibilities.
The family had moved onto a new-build estate. Initially, their road was relatively quiet, but as the development progressed, traffic began to increase.
They adapted accordingly, allowing Luna outside during the afternoons when most people were at work, hoping to minimise the risks.
Then came the day that changed everything.
Luna had gone outside as she normally would. Her owner was upstairs in the bedroom when she saw her husband open the front door.
The look on his face was one of pure panic.
She ran outside to find her beautiful Luna lying on their lawn.
A woman who had been travelling in the car behind the vehicle that hit Luna had witnessed what happened and stopped to help. Luna had tried to run home to her family.
They scooped her up and rushed her towards the vet, desperately hoping they could save her.
Sadly, they couldn’t.
Luna was gone.
The only comfort her family had was that she had made it home, and they were able to be with her.
But the questions didn’t end there.
In the immediate aftermath, and understandably overwhelmed by anger and grief, Luna’s owner posted on a local Facebook group. She said they had camera footage and that, if the person responsible didn’t come forward, they would take it to the police.
Eventually, a message arrived from a woman explaining that her husband had been driving the car.
She said he hadn’t been sure what he had hit, but hadn’t stopped because he was already late taking the children to a swimming lesson.
She also explained that the children were upset and that they hadn’t wanted to frighten them.
For Luna’s family, this raised an even more painful question: had he known what he had hit?
The people who stopped to help also reported that the driver had been speeding through the estate.
The impact on Luna’s family was devastating.
Her owner couldn’t bring herself to enter the spare room where Luna’s toys and beds were kept. She closed the door and didn’t go back in for months.
Luna was just two years old. Her family had had her for less than a year.
They had wanted to give her the life she deserved, and instead they were left feeling that they had somehow let her down.
Since then, the family have welcomed another rescue cat, Boo, and have moved house. But the experience has left its mark. Luna’s owner still experiences huge anxiety about letting Boo outside.
Luna is buried in her owner’s mum’s garden, alongside other beloved family cats, so she remains close to them.
Why Luna’s story matters
Luna’s owner has a message she wants people to understand:
A pet is a member of someone’s family. For many people, they are also a companion, a source of comfort and an important part of everyday life.
Accidents happen. Cats can run out unexpectedly, and collisions cannot always be prevented.
But what happens afterwards matters.
If a driver knows they have hit a cat, they should stop safely, check on the animal and report what has happened. If the cat is injured, getting help quickly could save their life. If the cat has sadly died, reporting the collision could help reunite them with their family.
Luna’s story is a reminder that behind every collision is a family who may be left grieving, searching for answers or wondering what happened to their beloved companion.
No family should have to fight to find out what happened to their cat.
And no cat should be left without help simply because stopping is inconvenient.
Luna was rescued. She was loved. She mattered.
For Luna. For Monty. For all of our babies. ππΎ
